For the patients, For the development of medicine, For society
Okayama University Hospital has inherited over 150 years of history and tradition since its establishment as the Okayama Domain Medical Institute Hospital in 1870. In 1888, the medical department of the Third Higher Middle School was established, followed by the medical department of the Third Higher School in 1895. The institution earned high regard, gaining the reputation of "Tokyo University in the East, Okayama in the West." In 1897, Kyoto Imperial University was established, and four years later, Okayama's medical department became independent as Okayama Medical College, now known as the Okayama University School of Medicine. Today, Okayama University Hospital serves as the "engine" driving medical care, education, and research in the healthcare field, collaborating with numerous affiliated hospitals, particularly throughout the Chugoku and Shikoku regions.
Guided by the philosophy of “We offer highly advanced medical care in a caring manner, train and educate excellent medical professionals, and contribute to continuous health promotion in society and the community.” Okayama University Hospital remains dedicated to promoting safe and secure medical care. Our hospital performs the highest number of congenital heart disease surgeries in Japan, along with other highly complex procedures. As of 2025, we are operating with four surgical robots, continuing to lead the field of robot-assisted surgery. Furthermore, our hospital ranks among Japan’s top institutions for interventional radiology (IVR), a minimally invasive treatment using catheters guided by imaging technology.
We have achieved numerous milestones, including Japan’s first successful lung transplant and simultaneous liver-kidney transplant from a brain-dead donor, leading the nation with a high success rate and volume of organ transplants. As the "Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Promotion Base Hospital" in the Chugoku region, we also perform numerous hematopoietic stem cell transplants for patients with leukemia and other severe diseases, contributing to advancements in regenerative transplantation medicine.
In addition to providing advanced medical care, Okayama University Hospital plays a crucial role as the "last stronghold" in pediatric, perinatal, and emergency medicine. In 2012, we established the "Medical Center for Children," and in 2024, the "Comprehensive Center for Children,Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer," ensuring seamless and comprehensive medical care and support from childhood to adulthood. To address the increasing number of high-risk pregnancies and childbirth due to rising maternal age, we expanded our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in 2024 with a newly constructed ward. In 2025, we will establish a Maternal-Fetal Intensive Care Unit (MFICU) and be designated as a "Comprehensive Perinatal Maternal and Child Medical Center," further reinforcing our role as the last stronghold for regional perinatal care and a training hub for perinatal medical professionals.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we accepted critically ill patients, and in 2022, we opened the first "Children’s Emergency and Critical Care Center" in the Chugoku region, continuing our commitment to providing essential emergency care from children to adults.
Research is also a key mission of Okayama University Hospital. In recent years, cancer genome medicine, which involves analyzing the genetic makeup of cancer to provide personalized treatments, has rapidly advanced. As the only "Cancer Genome Medicine Core Hospital" in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions, we lead clinical trials and cutting-edge medical treatments to ensuring optimal care for each cancer patient. As a "Core Hospital for Clinical Research," we drive high-quality clinical research essential for developing innovative pharmaceuticals and medical devices originating from Japan, positioning ourselves at the forefront of international clinical research and investigator-initiated trials.
Additionally, as a "Translational Research Support Institution," we bridge the gap between basic research and clinical application, continuously advancing medical innovation. Through industry-academia-government collaboration, we foster an interdisciplinary research environment to generate groundbreaking medical advancements, contributing to the sustainable health improvement of society and the community.
Okayama University Hospital remains committed to advancing medicine and serving patients and society with dedication and teamwork. We appreciate your continued support for Okayama University Hospital.
