YASUO KUNIYOSHI’S LIFE AND WORK IN NEW YORK special presentation at the Nippon Club
February 11, 2025
We are delighted to invite you to an upcoming event, a special presentation titled “Yasuo Kuniyoshi’s Life and Work in New York” by the guest presenter, Mr. Shun Ito, Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Education, Okayama University, Okayama, Japan.
This presentation will explore the fascinating life and remarkable work of Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1889–1953), a Western-style painter who lived and worked in New York during the tumultuous early 20th century. Known for his extraordinary talent, Kuniyoshi achieved numerous accolades, including representing the United States at the Venice Biennale, often referred to as the “Olympics of Art.”
Despite his artistic achievements, Kuniyoshi remains relatively unknown in Japan and was largely forgotten in the United States following his death.
His life tells a compelling story of navigating two cultures—the land of his birth, Japan, and the country that shaped his career, the United States. In this insightful presentation, Mr. Ito will delve into how Kuniyoshi rose to prominence as a representative artist of the U.S. while also facing challenges stemming from his choices and views on art, education, and society.
Following the presentation, we invite you to a reception where you can connect with other attendees and discuss the insights shared.
