Okayama University Students Participated in the International Forum 'Nagasaki Peace-Preneur Forum'

May 16, 2024

From May 10 to 13 in Nagasaki Prefecture, Okayama University students, NUNO Kokoro, a fourth-year student in the Discovery Program for Global Learners (GDP), Akramjonova Dilyorakhon Azizibek Kizi, a second-year GDP student, and MIYAMOTO Ayuha, a first-year doctoral student in the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, participated in the "Nagasaki Peace-Preneur Forum powered by One Young World 2024."

This forum, organized by the One Young World Nagasaki Council, comprised of academia, industry, and government within Nagasaki Prefecture, and supported by the Next Generation Leaders Global Summit "One Young World (OYW)," saw approximately 150 participants from 20 countries worldwide.

The opening ceremony took place on the 10th at a venue in Nagasaki City, where prelude remarks were given by OYW Nagasaki Council Chairman, SHIRABE Susumu, OYW Japan Committee Executive Director, OKUBO Kimito, hibakusha (atomic bomb survivor) TOMONAGA Masao, Nagasaki Governor OISHI Kengo, and Mayor SUZUKI Shiro. On the 11th, as a guest speaker, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs of the United Nations, NAKAMITSU Izumi, shared insights from her experiences working in conflict regions and addressing international security and disarmament issues. She encouraged participants, saying, "In order to execute sustainable and long-term solutions towards peace, the power of young people is indispensable. For the sake of future peace, I urge you to raise your voices with courage, passion, and hope, leveraging innovation."

Throughout the event, numerous opportunities for interaction were provided, allowing Okayama University students to engage in discussions and meals with participants and guests such as Under-Secretary-General Nakamitsu and Jamaican Ambassador to Japan, Shorna-Kay Richards, gaining invaluable experiences. Moreover, through talk sessions, workshops, networking events among participants, and fieldwork at the Atomic Bomb Museum and Peace Park, they had the chance to deeply contemplate the importance of actions towards peace, nuclear disarmament, and the impacts of the atomic bombings in Nagasaki.

This year's OYW Summit is scheduled to be held in Montreal, Canada from September 18 to 21, and recruitment of student delegates is currently underway within the university (deadline: June 3). For more details, please refer to the following event information on the Okayama University website:
